HAND RENDERINGS

For the last decade my usual method of designing and engineering case & millwork has always been CAD & 3D software such as AutoCad and Sketchup.

This still holds true… for the most part, but, lately my new employer as of 2021 prefers I execute my initial designs with hand sketches. In the old days everything I drafted and rendered was by hand – freehand and straight edge (like a clear triangle and mech pencil).

I started young, I had my own design/build company and ran it for 20 yrs – drawing literally thousands of projects day and night. Sketching in front of client is always a good idea and I did plenty.

Learning AutoCad made drafting immensely more accurate and efficient. It also opens up more ways to be creative and experimental – especially during layout. So, even if I am to hand render a project like an elaborate kitchen and incorporate a sitdown bar into it – I prefer to start the layout in CAD and then elevate the PLAN VIEW with pencil in hand.

This site was originally just a lengthy resume to land my first design/engineer job after being self employed all those years. Now, rolling up my sleeves and getting back into hand drawing – I thought it may be fun to share a few of these.

My new job allows me to draw everyday. There are so many drawings its difficult to place an order to them. I still do many CAD elevations to help the team price or give a head start on final drafting and I still work a lot in Sketchup but not as much as I used to. I may start sharing these as well over time.
